CAA Issues FPV UK with 2026 Article 16 Operational Authorisation

FPV UK is proud to announce that the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has issued it with a new Article 16 Operational Authorisation for 2026.

The Article 16 Operational Authorisation was first introduced when the UK drone regulations changed on 31 December 2020, transitioning from the previous Air Navigation Order framework to the UAS Implementing Regulation. Since then, Article 16 has given FPV UK members operational privileges that go beyond the standard Open Category rules, while maintaining a strong focus on safety and accountability.

What Does Article 16 Mean for FPV UK Members?

The FPV UK Article 16 Operational Authorisation enables members to fly with greater flexibility in a range of scenarios that would otherwise be restricted. One of the most significant benefits is the ability to fly FPV without a competent observer when operating in a sterile area, such as a closed FPV race venue.

The authorisation also permits members to fly non-multirotor aircraft above 400 feet.

Article 16 allows FPV UK members to fly in built-up areas used only for recreational purposes, such as public parks.

Reduced Separation Distances

Article 16 also introduces more practical separation distances from uninvolved people. FPV UK members may fly to a minimum distance of 30 metres from uninvolved persons, reduced to 15 metres during take-off and landing. This distance forms an imaginary safety bubble around individuals.

New FPV UK Handbook

To support the latest issue of the authorisation, FPV UK has released a new FPV UK Handbook, which works alongside the Article 16 Operational Authorisation document. All members must read, understand, and formally accept both the Operational Authorisation and the Handbook before flying under Article 16 conditions.

The authorisation also includes specific accident and incident reporting requirements, particularly when operating under the additional privileges it provides. Members are reminded that compliance with these requirements is essential to maintaining the trust placed in FPV UK by the CAA.

The 8th Issue of the Article 16 Operational Authorisation is a significant achievement and ensures that FPV UK members can continue to enjoy their flying safely, legally, and responsibly.
